GIVING BACK
We believe in leading by example and as a social enterprise, there is no better way than to give back to the community. We do so in a variety of ways, ranging from scholarships and grants to outreach projects like free clinics and training for the underserved aspects of the community.
If you are interested in partnering with us or working to find a creative solution to some of our community’s most pressing problems, drop us an email at contact.vn@theglobalcitizen.sg.
PAST INITIATIVES
Building the Local Debate Coaching Community in Vietnam
As part of The Global Citizen Vietnam’s continual efforts to build and empower local debate communities, we launched the first-ever Axiom Coaches Scheme (“ACS”). This initiative was specially designed for aspiring debate coaches in Hanoi, Vietnam at no cost. Our goal was to equip budding coaches with the necessary teaching skills and confidence to make a positive difference within their local communities. In total 6 coaches underwent training from May to July 2018, and eventually graduated from the course.
The next course will commence in September 2018, and interested applicants can look out for more information that will be released in August 2018.
Launch of first Debate Scholarship for Vietnamese Students
In November 2017, The Global Citizen Vietnam launched its first Debate Scholarship designed to help students offset all fees associated with training for students who come from less privileged backgrounds. A total of three such scholarships were given out. One of which was awarded to Le Hoang Mai Anh, who was also the first student from Ho Chi Minh City to be selected for the National Debate Team of Vietnam. Mai Anh would go on to debate at all 8 rounds of the World Schools Debating Championship 2018 held in Zagreb, Croatia, as well as at the Harvard College Debate Invitational 2018 in Boston, USA.

Growing the World Schools Debating Championship spirit in Vietnam
Organized from 31 March – 1 April 2018, Hanoi Debate Tournament 2018 (“HDT” previously known as Puzzle Ams Debate Tournament) was the second debate competition in Vietnam to adopt the World Schools Debating Championship format. Notably, the competition offered students a choice of debating in English or Vietnamese. This tournament was made possible courtesy of The Global Citizen Vietnam, which not only sponsored part of the event but also lent its expertise in adjudication and event management to the tournament conveners.
HDT is an annual debate competition for high school students co-organized by The Global Citizen Vietnam and students from Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. To find out more about the competition and their details next year, visit www.facebook.com/HDT2018.
Bringing International Debate to Vietnam
As a pioneer of debate in Vietnam, The Global Citizen was one of the two lead sponsors and a co-organizer of Vietnam's first debate tournament to be held in English and to use the World Schools Debating Championship format. The nation-wide tournament known as the Hanoi Open Vietnam Schools Debating Championship (HN-VSDC) was held from 28 – 29 October 2018 and was endorsed by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. This landmark educational event also marked a key turning point in Vietnam’s debating history. Over two hundred students were introduced to the art of debate and engaged in a meaningful weekend of academic, not to mention, respectful discourse.
HN-VSDC is proudly supported by the Vietnamese Government and is one of the key platforms used to select future members of Vietnam’s national debate team. To find out more about HN-VSDC and this year’s competition dates, visit www.facebook.com/vsdcdebate/.
